Freight billing is one of the few cost areas where small, repeated mismatches add up fast — especially when the invoice, contract terms, and operational shipment data don’t fully align. Public sources consistently describe this as a persistent “leakage” risk.

There isn’t a single universal benchmark, but across trade and industry sources the share of invoices with at least one error is commonly discussed in the ~10% to ~25%+ range — with higher rates tied to complex charge structures.

Why speed matters?

Finding an issue isn’t the same as getting money back. Time-to-detect directly affects recoverability, because dispute windows close and collection success falls as claims age. In a government post-payment audit dataset, uncollected overcharges were <10% when lag was under ~400 days, but rose to >25% at ~600–799 days and ~35% at ≥800 days—a strong, defensible illustration of why speed is financially material.
